PA Stitchers of Valor (Quilts of Valor Foundation)

Specific Need

PA Stitchers of Valor is the local chapter of the National Quilts of Valor Foundation. We are a group of volunteers that meet on a monthly basis to use our talents to make quilts to be awarded to Service Members and Veterans. Although we are part of a National Organization we get no funding from them, all money is raised by us and is kept locally to continue to make these quilts. We currently have 50+ Veterans on our list waiting for a quilt, the funds raised will go towards purchasing the fabric and supplies needed to be able to recognize these Veterans for their service and to be able to continue to fullfill our mission to cover our local Veterans and Service Members with comforting and healing Quilts of Valor. Each quilt made costs around $250 - $300 to make and we are awarding on average of 100 Quilts of Valor a year.

Mission

The mission of the Quilts of Valor Foundation is to cover service members and veterans touched by war with comforting and healing Quilts of Valor.

Profile

PA Stitchers of Valor got started in 2016 when 2 Quilts of Valor were made for family members. We joined the National Foundation in April 2017 and had our first award ceremony in May 2017 awarding 11 Veterans with their Quilts of Valor. Since that date we have awarded 851Quilts of Valor to our local Veterans and Service Members in recognition of their service to our great country. Here are a couple comments, of many, we have received from Veterans that received their Quilt of Valor: "I really didn't want to receive a quilt, there are so many more deserving them myself, but after the heartfelt ceremony, I was glad I did." " I have never been recognized for my service, I served in Vietnam and received everything but recognition and respect for my service. I want to go around showing everyone that I was finally recognized for my service after so many years." We have no idea what our Veterans go through on a daily basis, they may have health issues like Agent Orange, cancer, etc; they may have mental health issues like PTSD, depression, suicidal thoughts, etc, our quilts are made with love and respect with the hopes that they bring hope and healing to our Veterans.
