Specific Need
We purchased the Saeger House in July of 2024 to move our museum, after 25 years in a borough building. It offers more room for displays and presentations, a more visible location on Main Street, and a historical site , as our town is named after Daniel Saeger and it was built in 1845. We opened at this location in July of2025 as the inside was 85% complete. Now however, we need to finish the third floor and to begin renovating the outside of the structure.
We also own the Patrick MeGill Cabin built in 1802. Some of the wood needs replaced on the porch and railings.
Mission
The Saegertown Heritage Society strives to increase and diffuse knowledge and appreciation of history, sites, and buildings of historical and architectural significance in the boroughs of Saegertown and Blooming Valley and the townships of Hayfield and Woodcock. To preserve and share with the public artifacts, books, exhibits, programs and tours to educate visitors and residents to their historical importance to the communities involved as well as Pennsylvania and United States connections.
Profile
The Saegertown Heritage Society began anew in 1999 with the acquisition of the previous library on Broad Street for a historical museum. In our 27 years we have acquired many unique donations of Saegertown area and general history memorabilia, along with a second building. The Patrick McGill House is the oldest original structure in Crawford County. We give guided tours throughout the warmer seasons to explain the family (founders of Saegertown, known at first as McGill's Settlement) and daily life on the Western Pennylvania frontier of the early 1800s. Last summer we opened our museum at a better location with 16 rooms of local history stressing ourunique heritage. Annual events include a Cherry Pie Hike on Presidents' Day, Celebrate Saegertown Day in August, a fall speaker series for September, October, and November. Also we adding this year a St. Nicholas Day in December to highlight our German Christmas traditions, especially for cummunity's children. As we continue to grow, we depend on financial support and volunteer help to continue our operations.
