Sugar Lake Cemetery Association

Specific Need

We would like to earn enough money to establish an organization and a program that would guarantee perpetuity for the Sugar Lake Cemetery (SLC).  The goal at this point is to create an escrow fund of $20,000.

Mission

We want to make sure that the Sugar Lake Cemetery is never again neglected.  We want to promote responsibility, quality, community pride, and caring.

Profile

In the recent past this cemetery was overrun with briars and brush.  Community volunteers took it upon themselves to improve the situation, but, for a variety of reasons, the community support has dwindled to the point where only a small local church is paying to have the grass cut.  The Crawford Heritage Community Foundation provided a grant that enabled the formation of the Sugar Lake Cemetery Association (SLCA).  This is a 501(C) 3 nonprofit organization that is designed to set goals and manage operations for the cemetery.  A title search has been completed.  The SLCA board members and supporters have done some arboreal work.  Research conducted by the forensic departments at LaRoche and Mercyhurst Universities is an ongoing project.  The technology they have used is impressive and the information that they have collected is extensive.  They have also offered to help us by providing a map that shows both current and future burial plots.

Over the past two years we have been able to raise about $7000 with a rummage sale, wooden Betsy Ross flag sales, and donations.  Seeking support through the Crawford Gives Progarm is just one of our current efforts to reach our goal of $20,000.
