Mission
Erie Bird Observatory fosters enthusiasm for birds and conservation through ornithological research and public engagement.Profile
Erie Bird Observatory (EBO) offers a diverse range of programs representative of their mission.
EBO serves as an expert resource on wild bird populations in the region. Conservation programs include: documenting marsh-breeding birds in coordination with ongoing habitat restoration efforts; examining the stopover ecology of migratory waterbirds and landbirds; monitoring shorebird activity at Gull Point, including the nesting of PA's only federally-endangered Piping Plovers; operating the long-term bird banding station out on Presque Isle.
EBO hosts a multitude of outreach and education programs that are free of charge and open to everyone. Programs include expert-led birding trips of Birding Hotspots in Crawford and Erie Counties as well as public bird-banding demonstrations at Presque Isle State Park.
EBO collaborates with other local nonprofits and organizations, such as Tamarack Wildlife Center, Presque Isle Audubon Society, Regional Science Consortium, Allegheny College, and more on many projects throughout the year. EBO partners with the Erie-Western PA Port Authority to help provide migrating birds a safe passage as part of a nationwide Lights Out Campaign.
