Mission

To address the moral and spirtual wounds that are part of the militarly trauma constellation and to educate/train professionals, paraprofessionals, lay persons in their role relative to the continuum of trauma informed care.

We believe that:

  • trauma is best healed by unpaid acts of human kindness and caring, and in that spirit, we have no paid staff, receive no goverment funding, all services are 100% free.
  • the "community" and most volunteers, have been, and continue to be, excluded from a "professional" continuum of care, and the "professionals" assume that they can best address the needs of those who have experience military trauma.
  • the  milieu is of immense importance for therapy  and education/training, and to that end VPALS is a sensory rich setting that, when combined with therapeutic interventions and trauma informed citizen invollvement, successfully helps traumatized individuals realize that they have an undamaged spirit within their being.
  • Lilac Springs consists of 68 acres and accommodation for all participants, has a respectful/low/key military presence within a contemporary traquil civilian setting.

Profile

Since 2008, VPALS has offered 3-day “Breakaways” for combat veterans and their partners, for family members of KIA, for those who have lost a loved one to suicide, and for those who have experienced military sexual trauma.

The venue for each Breakaway is 68 acres of land with ponds, trails, a labyrinth, meditation center, dining building, and sleeping accommodations for 12-14 individuals; there is no cost to participants, and to date far, 250 people have attended.

Beginning in 2017, VPALS, in conjunction with the Mercer County Veterans Court, has trained 60 Veteran Court Mentors from counties throughout Western Pennsylvania.

Our motto is “Any Vet – Any Era – Anywhere,” and we have worked with veterans of WWII, Korea, Vietnam, Grenada, Lebanon, Panama, Kosovo, Desert Storm, Operation Iraqi Freedom, Operation Enduring Freedom, and Operation New Dawn.

There is no paid staff, we operate independently from government funding and support for our efforts has come from private citizens, businesses, and various organizations.
